Setting up my blog

5th October 2011,

Today i joined Mr. Campbell's media lesson for the first time, I created a blog and was taught a lesson on continuity. Continuity is an uninterrupted connection which is important when filming to ensure that schemes flow and make sense and that characters, actos/actresses etc are where they should be and don't look different every scene.

An example of bad continuity is shown below:

This video shows a very good example of bad continituity. From when the camera shoots the police officer in the first shot, however when the camera goes back to him for the second shot he seems to have miraculously appeared a pair of glasses on his face.

I also learnt about the 180° rule. When filming scenes the actors stay in the position from which they are being filmed. The camera does not change position however because the scene would then be reversed which could lead to confusion. This can be a very disorientated image for the audience.

An example of the 180° rule is shown below:

In Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Gollum has a conversation with himself or with his other personality. Because the filmmakers use the 180 degree rule, and have the good Gollum looking left as he speaks while the evil Gollum looking right, the audience perceives Gollum as two different characters talking to each other. This is done so well you are convinced there are two people having a conversation, in this case; Gollum and Smeagol.
